Head of Laboratory
DSc (Biological Sciences), Professor, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences
Marine biologist specialising in bio-oceanography, author of 11 monographs and over 100 scientific publications.

Together with colleagues and students:
• Developed an algorithm and estimated the stocks of deep-sea plankton; showed that its integral biomass has been underestimated by one to two orders of magnitude, and that the global stock of deep-sea shrimp is no smaller than that of deep-sea fish.
• Developed methods for assessing plankton from the deep-submergence vehicles Mir, in which he made over 20 dives. On this basis proved that hydrothermal ecosystems are not two-dimensional but three-dimensional structures, linked by material flows with the surrounding water column.
• Showed that the benthopelagic zone (the near-bottom water layer) is continuous throughout the ocean, although the fauna inhabiting it changes with depth and region. Described the adaptations of this fauna to the use of the resources of both the seabed and the water column.
• Discovered and described more than 50 new species and 9 new families and subfamilies of shrimp and krill. Constructed a natural (phylogenetic) systematics of planktonic shrimp and krill and described the patterns of evolution of these groups.
Author of original courses on marine biology and planktonology at Moscow State University and MIIGAiK, has lectured abroad many times, and is the author of two textbooks. Member of the editorial boards of the journals Invertebrate Zoology and Geochemistry.
